BAE Systems has secured two contracts from the US Navy, with a combined value of $98m, to undertake scheduled modernisation work on two the Littoral Combat Ship USS Kansas City (LCS 22) and guided missile destroyer USS Stockdale (DDG 106).

The maintenance activities for both vessels are set to begin in May 2026 at BAE Systems’ San Diego shipyard.

The company received a $37m docking selected restricted availability contract for the USS Kansas City.

Work will include drydocking the 2,550-tonne trimaran vessel, performing underwater hull conservation, upgrading onboard systems, and refurbishing accommodation areas for its 41 crew members.

For the USS Stockdale, BAE Systems will conduct work under a $61m contract.

Tasks on the 9,200-tonne ship involve preserving the underwater hull, reconditioning the superstructure, refurbishing interior fuel and ballast tanks, and updating living spaces.

The Southern California shipyard will oversee these projects.

BAE Systems maritime solutions San Diego vice president and general manager Eric Icke said: “Our team looks forward to executing the scheduled maintenance work aboard the Kansas City and Stockdale.

“Working alongside US Navy personnel and our subcontractor teammates, our shipyard team will apply our Navy ship repair expertise to ensure both ships return to the fleet capable to fulfil our nation’s requirements.”

USS Kansas City is the 12th Independence-class LCS and is the third US Navy vessel named after Kansas City, Missouri.

USS Stockdale is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer that entered into service in April 2009.

The destroyer bears the name of Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale (1923-2005), a Medal of Honour recipient.

In early 2025, BAE Systems received a $212m contract for upgrading the amphibious transport dock ship USS Green Bay (LPD 20).

In November 2024, the company was awarded US Navy contracts worth $202m for modernisation and maintenance services on two other naval ships including the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Laboon (DDG 58) and the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1).
