Booz Allen Hamilton has secured a $99m contract from the US Navy’s Military Sealift Command (MSC) to deliver engineering, deployment, and ongoing support of wireless networks for civil service mariners serving on government-operated ships.

The contract covers vessels stationed in the Pacific, Europe, and the US, with the aim of equipping each with secure network connections using Low Earth Orbit satellite technology, updated Wi-Fi systems, and 5G cellular communications.

Booz Allen’s selection for the contract follows its recent completion of a 5G rapid prototyping project with Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic.

That effort involved testing and piloting a wireless design intended to facilitate both shipboard and pierside communications, enabling the use of edge applications alongside cloud-based services.

Booz Allen chief technology office Edge/NextG senior vice president Chris Christou said: “Bridging the connectivity gap at sea and in port is critical, not only to enable the Navy’s warfighting readiness, but also to improve quality of life and crew retention among the thousands of civil service mariners who help keep the fleet mission-ready.

“Booz Allen’s combination of advanced wireless engineering expertise, mission understanding, and a rigorous systems engineering approach enables us to install the capabilities our customers need while also helping them to scale implementation. We’re excited to translate our prototyping experience into a successful production phase.”

Under this new contract, Booz Allen will broaden its 5G prototype to support Military Sealift Command’s advanced wireless initiatives. It will do so by applying its expertise in model-based systems engineering, network engineering, cloud architecture, NextG and wireless networking, edge technologies, and cybersecurity.

The work is intended to enhance connectivity and support improvements in working and living conditions for civil service mariners.

The Military Sealift Command operates about 140 civilian-crewed ships that provide ocean transportation for the Pentagon.

These ships are responsible for replenishing US Navy vessels at sea, carrying out specialised missions, prepositioning combat cargo globally, performing various support services, and transporting equipment and supplies for deployed US forces as well as coalition partners.
