Kongsberg Maritime has entered a contract with Hindustan Shipbuilding Limited (HSL) to supply electric replenishment-at-sea (RAS) equipment for the Indian Navy’s Fleet Support Ships (FSS) programme.
The FSS initiative involves the construction of five large replenishment vessels aimed at boosting the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy.

In 2023, the Indian Ministry of Defence signed a contract with HSL for the acquisition of these vessels at a total cost of approximately Rs190bn ($2.24bn).
Kongsberg Maritime’s RAS technology is designed to improve naval logistics by facilitating faster, safer, and more reliable supply operations at sea.
The advanced electric RAS system enhances operational efficiency and safety, which are said to be vital for naval operations during prolonged missions.
Under the contract, Kongsberg will provide a range of replenishment and refuelling capabilities.

By GlobalDataThis includes electric winches, movable high points, masts, and ancillary equipment necessary for connecting FSS ships with other vessels during replenishment operations.
Additionally, the contract includes an astern refuelling system for situations where abeam replenishment is not feasible.
The RAS system will handle the transfer of solid loads up to two tonnes, as well as liquids such as fuel and drinking water.

HSL chairman and managing director Hemant Khatri noted that a key aspect of this project is its focus on indigenisation, with more than 50% indigenous content.
This aligns with the Indian government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) initiative and underscores HSL’s dedication to fostering self-sufficiency in defence production.
Besides, the project is expected to stimulate economic growth by transferring advanced technology to India and creating substantial employment opportunities for local industries.
