CybAero has successfully completed a test campaign with their ship-based system APID One on-board the Swedish Navy’s Visby-class stealth corvette HMS Karlstad.

The test campaign was carried out in collaboration with the Swedish Defence Procurement Agency (FMV) and the Swedish Navy.

During the campaign, the system’s capability to perform autonomous starts and landings from a fast moving ship, and ability to engage in missions to identify objects in the water were tested.

“This is the first time that a helicopter of this type and size has performed fully autonomous landings on a corvette.”

CybAero CEO Mikael Hult said: "The system has landed autonomously on the corvette at a speed of 25k, and in wind conditions up to 15m/s.

"This is the first time that a helicopter of this type and size has performed fully autonomous landings on a corvette."

CybAero’s APID One is designed to serve as an aerial sensor system, featuring aerodynamic properties.

Following the test campaign, the APID One has been proven suitable for conducting a variety of military missions, such as those performed on the HMS Karlstad.

The system can also be used for civilian missions, such as tracking lost refugees at sea, inspection of oil rigs, and coastal mapping.

CybAeros system is said to enhance the reconnaissance capability of other similar vessels in a simple and cost-efficient way.

Airbus partnered with CybAero in 2011 for the Visby trials in order to assess the capabilities of the system.

Hult added: "Ship Operations in littoral waters include complex tasks, with elements such as smugglers, submarines and refugees.

"We have listened to the end-users requirements and created an easy-to-use system with two unique features; the automatic ship landing system and the heavy fuel propulsion."
