GE Marine Solutions has been contracted to deliver two LM2500 aeroderivative marine gas turbines for the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force’s (JMSDF) new 8,200t Aegis-class destroyer.

The LM2500 propulsion modules will be delivered by Tokyo-based IHI, GE Marine Systems’ supplier, to Japan Marine United shipyard in 2018.

The LM2500 has been designed to maximise shipboard maintainability and parts replacement downtime, including split compressor casing, in-place blade and vane replacement, in-place hot section maintenance and accessible external fuel nozzles.

"By using our marine gas turbines, the JMSDF benefits from long-term support, operational efficiency and commonality within their fleet."

It is a high-performance unit featuring a gas generator, a power turbine, attached fuel and lubes oil pumps, a fuel control and speed governing system, as well as controls and devices for starting and monitoring engine operations.

GE Marine Operations vice-president Brien Bolsinger said: "By using our marine gas turbines, the JMSDF benefits from long-term support, operational efficiency and commonality within their fleet.

"As with previous contracts, IHI will handle in-country design, manufacture and testing of the LM2500 propulsion modules for the new 8,200t class Aegis destroyer programme."

GE LM gas turbines currently power more than 500 vessels used by 34 navies worldwide.

The JMSDF uses LM2500 and LM500 gas turbines for its Kongou, Murasame, Atago, Hyuga, and Izumo-class ships.

To date, IHI has packaged, tested and delivered more than 300 GE LM marine and industrial gas turbines, including 102 LM2500 engines and 79 LM6000 gas turbines.

The German Navy’s third F125-class frigate Sachsen-Anhalt, which was christened last month, is also powered by GE’s LM2500 gas turbine.
