Spanish defence systems supplier Indra and SAES, a company specialised in underwater acoustics, have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on infrastructure protection, acoustic systems, and simulation technologies.
The agreement was formalised during Feindef, the international defence trade fair scheduled from 12–14 May 2025 in Madrid.
The agreement comes at a time of growing concern over the security of maritime routes and critical infrastructure, notes Indra.
Indra group executive chairman Ángel Escribano said: “Indra is committed to fostering collaboration and the collective work of Spanish industry to develop cutting-edge solutions, ensure the sovereignty and strategic autonomy of our Armed Forces and allies and enable them to compete at the highest level around the world.”
Both companies are aligning efforts to safeguard shipping lanes and bolster the protection of sea-based communication and energy systems, as well as port facilities.
The partnership also aims to support the Swedish Navy’s long-term strategic objectives.
One of the central goals of the Navy’s 2050 Vision is to ensure that its fleet remains technologically advanced and adaptable to an increasingly complex and unstable global environment.
SAES president Javier Mármol said: “SAES is a company that’s highly specialised in underwater acoustics and multi-influence, supplying advanced systems to the Navy and advocating collaboration as the key to open and more seamless and efficient innovation.”
Indra is already engaged in several European research and development projects.
Among them is Smart Maritime and Underwater Guardian (SMAUG), which integrates intelligence and advanced algorithms with various acoustic sensors and drones to strengthen port security.
The company provided the electronic defence systems, radars and communication technologies to the Swedish naval ships.
These systems are not only deployed on the Navy’s most modern vessels but are also in service with technologically advanced navies around the world.
Currently, Indra is enhancing its solutions through the IndraMind intelligence platform.
In 2024, Indra and Emirati defence conglomerate, EDGE Group formed a joint venture to develop advanced military radar systems.
