USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115), the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, has completed the ten-day Surface Warfare Advanced Tactical Training (SWATT).

The exercise was undertaken to boost the warship’s warfighting capabilities, tactical proficiencies and capability to integrate with a larger force via a host of tactical scenarios.

USS Rafael Peralta commanding officer commander Charles Cooper said: “SWATT provided a great opportunity to test our sailors in realistic situations where they had to make tactical decisions and react to the situation at hand.

“The Lava Dogs did a great job relying on their previous training and experience in theater to meet dynamic challenges. SWATT also gave us an opportunity to work with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), one of our strongest and closest allies in the region.”

During the ten-day exercise, the warship took part in different kinds of warfighting scenarios while steaming with the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers USS Antietam (CG 54), USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) and USS Shiloh (CG 67), and the JMSDF’s Atago-class guided-missile destroyer JS Ashigara (DDG 178).

Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center (SMWDC) deployed senior mentors and warfare tactics instructors (WTIs) to facilitate the warfighting scenarios.

These scenarios were intended to offer sailors of Arleigh Burke-class ship Rafael Peralta to apply their skills across the surface warfare, air warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and information warfare mission areas.

USS Rafael Peralta ordnance officer from Chicago Ensign Amanda Cervantes said: “SWATT presented a variety of engaging and realistic scenarios. It was good to have an opportunity to exercise in a tactical mindset while simulating real-world situations specific to this area of responsibility (AOR).”

The exercise scenarios were intended to help sailors to get more familiar with the weapons systems, and in turn, help them to react faster and more effectively in a real-world situation.

Undertaken under the guidance of SMWDC, SWATT is claimed to be the US Navy surface force’s advanced tactical training exercise designed to increase warfighting capability and tactical proficiency across all domains.

USS Rafael Peralta is assigned to Commander, Task Force 71/Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15, the US Navy’s forward-deployed DESRON and the US 7th Fleet’s principal surface force.
