The US Navy’s USS Dwight D Eisenhower (IKE) Carrier Strike Group (CSG) has participated in surface exercises with the Hellenic Navy in the Mediterranean Sea.

During the five-day exercise, held from 24 to 28 July, the two navies undertook formation steaming, tactical manoeuvres, and communications drills.

Command and control aspects were also tested and refined between the two navies.

The units that participated in the exercises were USS Dwight D Eisenhower (CVN 69), USS San Jacinto, USS Truxtun (DDG 103), and USS Aegean.

Destroyer Squadron 26 commander Captain Zoah Scheneman said: “Exercises like this enhance our professional relationships and improves overall coordination with allies and partner militaries during times of crisis.

“This opportunity flexed our ability to be postured with our Nato partners to be ready with credible force to assure, deter, and defend our interests in an increasingly complex security environment.”

Working as an air defence unit, Hellenic Navy frigate HN Aegean (FFGH 460) located and identified air contacts around the CSG.

The frigate also served as a horizon reference unit for CSG’s aircraft as they landed.

The vessel, as a helicopter aircraft control unit, checked aircraft in and out of the carrier’s air space.

Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS San Jacinto (CG 56) commanding officer Captain Edward Crossman said: “The Hellenic Navy has outstanding naval capabilities.

“We look forward to any chance to work with them as an opportunity to learn and fine-tune our tactics and procedures. It’s an absolute win for San Jacinto’s ‘Gunslingers’ to operate with our Nato partners.

“This training makes us stronger as an allied force dedicated to maintaining regional stability and sustaining freedom of the seas.”

The Dwight D Eisenhower CSG is now operating in the US 6th fleet area after spending several months in the Middle East.

In April, the USS Dwight D Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (CSG) participated with the French Navy to carry out a bilateral, interoperability exercise in the North Arabian Sea.

The vessels that conducted a formation steaming, an air defence exercise, and a surface gunnery exercise included the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D Eisenhower (CVN 69) (IKE), guided-missile cruiser USS San Jacinto (CG 56), and FS Forbin (D620).
