The US Navy’s Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (CSG) and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 17 have started strike missions from the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) to intensify the fight against ISIS.

In addition to anti-ISIS missions, the CSG is carrying out maritime security operations to reassure allies and partners, preserve freedom of navigation and ensure the free flow of commerce.

CSG 9 commander rear admiral Steve Koehler said: “The first day of flight operations supporting OIR is a highly anticipated day where the Theodore Roosevelt strike group transitions into combat operations to demonstrate our continued commitment to this region and our partner nations.

“Success in this important mission takes every sailor and marine on board working as a team.”

The Theodore Roosevelt CSG is deployed in the US 5th Fleet area of operations in support of OIR.

“Success in this important mission takes every sailor and marine on board working as a team.”

On 6 October this year, the US Navy aircraft carrier left its homeport of San Diego for a regularly-scheduled deployment to the US 7th and 5th Fleet areas of operations.

Koehler added: “CSGs are a flexible, adaptable and persistent force that help deter potential adversaries, respond to humanitarian crises, reassure partners and enhance security.

“We look forward to building on the success of the strike groups and air wings that have operated before us in 5th Fleet.”

CVW-17 squadrons comprise the Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 113, VFA-94, VFA-22, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 312, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 139, Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 116, Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 30, Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 6 and Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 73.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt was last deployed to the US 5th Fleet in 2015 during the vessel’s homeport shift from Norfolk.
