The US Navy has placed an order for Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRAD) maritime systems with Genasys, a company specialising in critical communications systems and solutions.

This order is a continuation of the Navy’s initiative to replace the first generation of LRADs with the more advanced LRAD 1000Xi models.

Designed for extended range communication and vessel defence, the new models are capable of transmitting hails, warnings, and commands over a distance of up to 3,000 metres (m).

The system is designed for protecting critical infrastructure, territorial waters, and border and port security.

This procurement is part of an ongoing effort that began with a previous order from the US Navy to Genasys in 2021.

The purchases are being made under a three-year indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract that was established in 2020.

Deliveries for the $2m order is expected within this fiscal year.

Genasys chief executive officer Richard Danforth said: “The LRAD 1000Xi systems are slated for deployment on Navy surface combatants, large amphibious ships, and aircraft carriers.

“LRADs have provided Navy ships with extended range, over-water communication and scalable escalation of force capabilities for more than 20 years. LRADs enhance operational effectiveness, strengthen ship self-defense, and improve safety on Navy and Coast Guard ships whether in port or deployed.”

The LRAD systems are utilised by the US Military as well as over 30 international Navies and Coast Guards for a wide array of missions.

These include ship-to-ship communication, managing vessel exclusion zones and restricted areas, conducting interceptions and interdictions, coordinating search and rescue operations, responding to environmental incidents, controlling coastal waters, countering piracy activities, handling maritime immigration encounters, among others.
