The US Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded a modification contract worth $171m to AgustaWestland Philadelphia (Leonardo) for the delivery of 36 TH-73A helicopters.

This modification is to a previous firm-fixed-price contract for the Advanced Helicopter Training System (AHTS) of the US Navy.

Under this, the US Navy has exercised options to build and deliver 36 more TH-73A helicopters.

The majority of work will be carried out in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with other activities to be performed in Texas and at various locations outside the US. It is expected to complete in December 2022.

The contracting activity for this award is the Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Maryland.

In January this year, the US Navy awarded a $176.5m contract to AgustaWestland Philadelphia (Leonardo) to manufacture 32 TH-73A helicopters in support of the AHTS programme.

The contract also includes the delivery of initial spares, peculiar support equipment, and pilot and maintenance training services.

The helicopter platform will be used to train the upcoming batch of student aviators from the US Navy, Marine Corps and US Coast Guard.

It will help meet advanced rotary-wing and intermediate tilt-rotor training requirements.

In July this year, the US Navy initiated an instructor pilot training programme with TH-73A AHTS.

The programme commenced with two instructor pilots from Training Air Wing (TAW) 5 at the AgustaWestland Philadelphia (Leonardo) facility.
