In a recent development along the coast of Crimea, Ukrainian Defence Intelligence claims that advancements in their maritime drone technology, particularly the Magura V5, have compelled the Russian Black Sea fleet to retreat from the region.

According to the Defence Intelligence of The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, Vadym Skibitskyi asserts that recent successes in damaging and driving away Russian naval assets have been primarily attributed to the deployment of their indigenous maritime drones. These unmanned aerial vehicles, particularly the Magura V5, have reportedly damaged several Russian warships, including reconnaissance, landing, missile, and patrol vessels.

Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia in Crimea’s Black Sea has seen significant developments, including multiple missile strikes targeting Russian naval facilities. Ukraine fired Storm Shadow missiles at Russian-occupied Sevastopol, causing damage to ships and infrastructure. As a response, Russia relocated part of its Black Sea Fleet to Novorossiysk port. 

Additionally, Russia has deployed jets armed with hypersonic missiles to patrol the Black Sea, shifting from a naval to an air-based strategy. Amidst these developments, Ukraine’s effective use of uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) has inflicted damage on Russian naval assets, with recent reports of sinking two major vessels using USVs.

Skibitskyi, in an interview for the documentary project “GUR. Battle for the Sea. All Roads Lead to Crimea” of the national telethon “We Are Ukraine”, emphasised the significance of these drone capabilities in deterring Russian aggression along the Black Sea coast. He highlighted the Magura V5’s precision, power, and evolving accuracy as key factors in keeping the Russian Federation cautious and reactive.
