Philippine defence secretary Delfin Lorenzana has confirmed the signing of the ‘Notice of Award’ for the Philippine Navy’s shore-based anti-ship missile acquisition project.
In a Facebook post, Lorenzana said the deal was negotiated with the Indian Government.

The deal includes acquisition of three batteries of the BrahMos cruise missile, jointly developed by India and Russia.
It also includes training for operators and maintainers and the required Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) package.
This development is expected to boost India’s efforts in becoming a major exporter of defence hardware, reported the Hindustan Times.
Delfin Lorenzana’s Facebook post read as follows: “Negotiated with the Government of India, it includes the delivery of three batteries, training for operators and maintainers as well as the necessary Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) package. Conceptualised as early as 2017, the Office of the President approved its inclusion in the Horizon 2 Priority Projects in 2020.

The deal, which was conceptualised in 2017, faced delays in budget allocation and due to the impact of Covid-19 pandemic.
The new anti-ship system aims to deter foreign vessels from encroaching on the country’s 200nm exclusive economic zone.
BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is designed and developed under a joint venture (JV) between India’s Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO)and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroeyenia (NPOM).
It is designed for launch against ships and land-based targets.
Last month, the Philippines Government reportedly allocated funds for the procurement of BrahMos missile system.
