The US Navy has awarded a contract to General Dynamics (GD) subsidiary Electric Boat to develop advanced submarine technologies for its existing and emerging undersea platforms.

Under the $89.9m contract, the company will support a wide range of technology areas including manufacturability, maintainability, survivability, hydrodynamics, acoustics and materials.

The modification contract also involves R&D work in areas including manning, hull integrity, performance, ship control, logistics, weapons handling and stowage, and safety.

Additionally, the company will provide Virginia-class technology insertion, identification of Ohio-class replacement technology options, future submarine concepts and core technologies.

The original contract was awarded in November last year and will be worth $711.4m over five years, if all options are availed.
