Terma has entered into an agreement with the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO) to support the Royal Danish Navy's Iver Huitfeldt-class frigates' upgrade with ballistic missile defence (BMD) and integrated air and missile defence (IAMD) capabilities.

Under the agreement, Terma will provide study and advisory support to DALO within the BMD and IAMD domains.

The Danish Government had decided to upgrade one of the Danish Navy's Iver Huitfeldt-class frigates to a BMD sensor role, and to offer this capability to the Nato BMD system.

” The frigate-based BMD offering to Nato is the most affordable option with the lowest risk for a country such as Denmark.”

An evolution of the Absalon Class developed by the navy and Odense Steel Shipyard (OSS), the Danish Navy's Iver Huitfeldt-Class frigates are the lead ship in the three-ship class of the Royal Danish Navy, and are said to be able to combat the increasing threat posed by ballistic missiles after being equipped with an IAMD sensor.

Terma command, control and sensor systems senior vice-president Thomas Blom said: "Because they were designed to be prepared for this mission, the frigate-based BMD offering to Nato is the most affordable option with the lowest risk for a country such as Denmark, while at the same time providing the only realistic pathway to a later engagement capability."

As part of an agreement between the Danish Government and the US in 2004, Terma has been working in the BMD and IAMD domains with international partners.

For more than 30 years, Terma has supplied command and control systems for sea-based anti-air warfare (AAW), including the C-Flex command and control system to the present ship classes of the Danish Navy.

The C-Flex command and control system is a next-generation, flexible solution that supports the full maritime domain security and surveillance missions by integrating the shipboard sensor and weapon systems to generate a real-time confident situational awareness display.

The system will serve as an IAMD capability for the tactical operators on-board the naval vessels to promote a situational awareness of both AAW and BMD at the same time.
