Düsseldorf, Germany-based Rheinmetall Group has been contracted by the Danish procurement authorities to supply additional 35mm Oerlikon Millennium guns.

Under the €20m follow-up order, the company will install its Millennium guns on the Royal Danish Navy ships, and also deliver spare parts and related technical services.

Delivery under the contract will be carried out in 2016.

"This order reflects strong customer satisfaction with existing systems, and their performance over the past decade."

According to the company, this order reflects strong customer satisfaction with existing systems, and their performance over the past decade.

Featuring a flexible ISO Mount installation concept, the automatic cannon can be used onshore as a ground-based air defence system.

It can be easily installed on any of the Danish Navy’s surface combatants, Absalon-class ships or the new Iver Huitfeldt-class frigate.

This multipurpose weapon system has been designed to fire the company’s 35mm Ahead airburst ammunition, which provides the navy with a close-range self-defence capability to protect high-value assets.

It is also capable of neutralising asymmetric and symmetric threats alike, including all incoming surface threats, as well as aerial targets.

In 2005, Denmark placed an initial order with Rheinmetall for the Oerlikon Millennium gun.

Five other Nato nations also use Rheinmetall’s programmable 35mm Ahead airburst ammunition.

When used with the Millennium Revolver Gun 35 / 1000, the ammunition results in massive yet flexible firepower that can be measured up to meet the requirements of a range of operational scenarios.
