The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has decommissioned the Kanimbla-class Landing Platform Amphibious ship HMAS Kanimbla at its home port of Garden Island, Sydney, Australia.

The 159.2m-long frigate has a displacement capacity of 8,534t and can cruise at a speed of 22 knots.

Commanding officer Brendon Zilko said the frigate had supported national and coalition operations ranging from the Western Pacific to the Middle East.

The amphibious warfare transport ship provided amphibious and sea-lift capability and has served the Australian Defence Force (ADF) for 17 years in humanitarian aid and disaster missions in addition to border protection duties.

The RAN is scheduled to receive the first of two landing helicopter dock (LHD) amphibious assault ships in 2014 to replace HMAS Kanimbla.
