The US Navy has awarded a contract to Moog to supply actuators for the next ten Virginia-class nuclear submarines.

Under the $33.8m agreement, which is part of the multi-year block IV procurement, Moog will deliver more than 1,000 actuators.

Moog Naval Systems business unit director David Hodge said: "We design and manufacture these actuators to have [a] low structure-borne vibration signature. In other words, we’re moving systems within the boat without making a lot of noise.

"We design and manufacture these actuators to have [a] low structure-borne vibration signature."

"Throughout the process our staff maintains a quality-first mindset, as the safety of the crew and the success of the mission depends on Moog technology."

Moog’s actuators will be used for a range of operations, including flow control of the ballast water and certain elements of the torpedo launch sequence.

The actuators are part of the system that forces high-pressure air into the main ballast tanks to set-off an emergency surfacing manoeuvre.

As part of the block IV procurement, General Dynamics Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding will construct and deliver the ten Virginia-class submarines between 2014 and 2023.

Moog has been supporting the US Navy’s Virginia-class programme since the construction of SSN 774 USS Virginia in 1998.

The company also delivers several elements under the SUBSAFE quality assurance programme, which involves submarine survivability and crew safety.
