The Indian and UK Navies have begun the week-long Konkan joint combat exercise off the coast of Goa, India, to focus on nuclear submarine operations.

The Shishumar-class INS Shankush submarine will participate in the exercise alongside the UK Royal Navy’s Trafalgar-class nuclear submarine.

The Indian Navy’s Beas Class missile frigate INS Betwa and the IL-38 SD maritime surveillance aircraft will also participate in the exercise, according to Press Trust of India.

The exercise is focused on honing skills in operating nuclear submarines and anti-submarine warfare missions.

India is set to receive the Russian Nerpa K-152 nuclear submarine on a ten-year lease by the end of this year.
