General Dynamics (GD) Advanced Informational Systems has received a contract from the US Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command to develop the Surface Mine Countermeasure Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (SMCM UUV) system.

The system, part of the Littoral Combat Ship Mine Warfare mission package, will allow ship crews to find mines, including those suspended in the ocean or buried on the seabed, and in cluttered underwater environments.

The unmanned underwater mine countermeasure vehicle will also provide intelligence support for other mine warfare systems by gathering environmental data.

The contract has a ceiling value of $86.7m for one Engineering Development Model (EDM) and five low-rate initial production systems, if all options are exercised.

Work will be carried out at the company’s facilities in North Carolina, Virginia, Massachusetts, and Florida, US.
