The Qatari Ministry of Defence has awarded a $4.5bn contract to Fincantieri to build a total of seven surface vessels.

The contractual work includes construction of four 100m-long corvettes, two patrol vessels and one amphibious vessel for the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces. Construction will start in 2018.

CAE has been contracted by the general headquarters of the UAE Armed Forces to set up a naval training centre in Taweelah for the naval forces of the UAE.

The contracts, worth $112.4m will also require CAE to provide UAE Joint Aviation Command with UH-60M and 407MRH helicopter simulators and training devices.

Work on the naval training centre is scheduled for completion in early 2019.

The Government of Canada has awarded a $37.9m contract to MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA) for the supply of a wide-area maritime surveillance solution.

The contract will see MDA provide Polar Epsilon 2 maritime and Arctic surveillance system and ground receiving stations for the Department of National Defence.

Lockheed Martin Missile and Fire Control has secured a $14m support contract for the US Navy’s SQQ-89 surface ship undersea warfare system.

The contract, awarded by the Naval Sea Systems Command, includes options, which if exercised, will bring the contract value to $169.5m.

The US Department of Defence (DoD) has awarded a $6.8m contract to Austal to provide Sea Giraffe 3D surveillance radar for the US Navy’s littoral combat ships (LCS) programme.

The new contract is a modification to the previously awarded contract.
