BMT Defence Services (BMT) has secured a new deal to deliver consultancy support for Norway's new submarine acquisition programme. 

The contract has been awarded by the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) following an international competition, and comprises an initial two-year support period with an option to extend for five years.

The deal serves as a framework agreement that will allow BMT to either perform stand-alone tasks or deliver resources to meet any shortfalls in capacity, capability or confidence within key project stakeholders' organisations.

ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems has been chosen by the Norwegian Government as the preferred bidder to construct the four new submarines, which will be based on the Type 212A design and are set to replace the Royal Norwegian Navy’s existing Ula-class vessel.

The company previously supported the Norwegian Defence Logistics Organisation in providing independent client advice on a wide range of topics and issues related to their submarine programmes, including feasibility studies into the Ula-class service life extension programme.

The Norwegian Government decided on Germany as strategic partner for the new submarines' common purchase and lifetime management in February, and the German Navy has announced plans to procure two identical vessels as part of a long-term navy-to-navy cooperation initiative.
