BMT Defence Services has designed a new logistics and support vessel (LSV), ordered by the Norwegian Defense Logistics Organisation (NDLO) for the Royal Norwegian Navy, using NAPA software package.

The NAPA for Design has been used to design the stability and hydrodynamics modelling of the vessel to produce a compartmentation model that can provide hull form throughout the design process to production.

The model will support the lifetime eco-efficiency of the vessel, either in combination with NAPA for operations systems and the NAPA Loading Computer, or as a standalone system that provides vital information on the vessel when it cannot be observed, according to NAPA.

"The software’s performance in complex calculations means we are able to analyse the results quickly, which frees-up time for improvements to the design itself."

BMT Defence Services Naval Architecture lead Will Giles said: "The software’s performance in complex calculations means we are able to analyse the results quickly, which frees up time for improvements to the design itself."

In June, BMT Defence Services was selected for $230m design contractor while BMT Reliability Consultants and BMT Isis will support the project’s delivery.

Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME), a long term user of NAPA software systems, will manufacture the 180m-long and 26,000t ship at its Okpo yard.

NAPA sales manager Mikko Forss said NAPA offers tools to post process and analyse the results, enabling users to understand how the design could be further improved.

"NAPA for Design combines both sheer calculation performance and an efficient design process to produce detailed analysis at a fast pace, ensuring naval architects can deliver on this demanding new LSV project, in terms producing the vessel’s design in a short timeframe," Forss added.

The vessel is scheduled to be delivered to the Royal Norwegian Navy in September 2016.
