The Indian Navy has decommissioned the Nilgiri Class naval ship INS Dunagiri following 33 years of service in the 14th Frigate Squadron.

INS Dunagiri entered service on 5 May 1977 and is capable of travelling for 20 hours at a constant speed of 20kt.

Indian Navy Vice-Admiral (retired) S Jain said most ships would undergo wear and tear to sustain speed for 20 hours.

“Had it not been for the hull, the ship could still have continued,” he said.

The Nilgiri Class frigates are updated versions of the Leander Class, designed and built by Mazagon Dock between 1972 and 1981, according to the Hindustan Times.

INS Taragiri and INS Vindhyagiri are the only two ships that remain in service in this class, and they will also be decommissioned after the Shivalik Class of frigates enter service.
