GD has been awarded a contract to equip 403 US Marine Corps light armored vehicles (LAV) with new improved self-sealing fuel tanks to enhance marine safety and survivability.

The improved tanks are designed to protect crew and vehicle from ballistic and shrapnel effects, whilst also bolstering the ability to complete missions and safely return to base.

Work under the $8m contract will be carried out at the company’s facilities in Michigan, New York, London, and Ontario, and the kits will be delivered for integration until January 2012.

The US Army TACOM Lifecycle Command is the prime contracting activity.
