The US Navy has awarded a 24-month technology demonstration phase contract to Lockheed to design an air and missile defence radar (AMDR) to upgrade the navy’s capability against anti-ship and ballistic missile threats.

Under the $119m contract, Lockheed will design the radar suite controller that will integrate the AMDR S-band and AMDR X-band radars to support simultaneous multimission operations in stress environments.

The AMDR S-band radar will provide volume search, tracking, ballistic missile defense discrimination and missile communications.

The AMDR X-band radar will provide horizon search, precision tracking, missile communication and terminal illumination.

The company’s SPY-1 family of radars, with anti-air warfare and ballistic missile defense multimission capability, are deployed on 100 surface combatant ships worldwide.
