Canadian, Danish and US Navies participated in Operation Nanook alongside the US Coast Guard between 6-26 August.

About 900 Canadian troops and 600 military personnel from the Danish Royal Navy and the US Navy patrolled parts of the Eastern and Northern Arctic by air, land and sea, according to CTV news.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the annual military exercise in the Canadian Arctic was designed to help reinforce Canadian sovereignty in the northern archipelago.

Operation Nanook is a sovereignty exercise conducted by Canadian forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Canadian coastguard and other government departments and agencies in Canada’s north.

Harper said Ottawa’s plans for military expansion in the North included deploying six new patrol ships, a Canadian Ranger force and a heavy icebreaker.
