The Russian Navy’s RFS Admiral Levchenko destroyer with a convoy of ten ships will join the international anti-piracy mission being held off the Somali coast, according to a navy spokesman.

“A total of 46 Russian nationals are part of the ships’ crews being escorted,” the spokesman said.

The Udaloy Class guided-missile destroyer Levchenko of the Northern Fleet will also be joined by the Olekma tanker and the SB-36 tugboat of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in the mission.

Pirate attacks worldwide have decreased by 34% year-on-year due to anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden, according to the International Maritime Bureau in London.

The Russian Navy previously joined international anti-piracy efforts off the Somali coast in October 2008.
