The Indian Kilo Class diesel-electric submarine INS Sindhurakshak will undergo modernisation at Russia’s Zvezdochka shipyard.

INS Sindhurakshak, the fifth Kilo Class ship, is being upgraded under a contract signed on 4 June 2010, between the Zvezdochka shipyard and the Indian defence ministry.

Under the $80m upgrade programme, Russia will provide complete overhaul of the submarine including its hull structures, improved control systems, a sonar, electronic warfare systems and an integrated weapon control system.

Russia built ten Kilo Class submarines for India and has upgraded four of them.

The Kilo Class diesel-electric submarines, known for being extremely quiet, have also been purchased by China, Iran, Poland, Romania and Algeria.
