EADS has delivered the second TRS-3D naval radar to Lockheed to be integrated on Fort Worth, the third new littoral combat ship (LCS 3).

The TRS-3D is a 3D multimode naval radar for surveillance, self-defence, gunfire support and helicopter control.

The naval radar is designed for automatic locating and tracking air and sea targets of all types.

The radar is particularly suited for early detection of small, fast-moving objects such as speed boats.

EADS Defence Electronics CEO Bernd Wenzler said the TRS-3D radar’s highly capable sensors ensured increased maritime security of coastal areas and provided situational awareness at any time.

The first radar is in operation on the USS Freedom, the first LCS.

Lockheed is the prime contractor under the US Navy littoral combat ship programme.
