LPD 22 will support the marine corps mobility triad, which consists of the landing craft air cushion vehicle, the expeditionary fighting vehicle and the Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft.
Combat capabilities incorporated onboard the ship include an advanced command-and-control suite, increased in-vehicle lift-capability, cargo-carrying capacity and advanced ship-survivability features.
The 684ft-long, 105ft-wide San Diego has a displacement capacity of 24,900t and can accommodate a landing force of up to 800 marines while cruising at a top speed of 22kt.
The vessel is the sixth San Antonio Class amphibious transport dock.
