Royal Marines in Afghanistan have received a new infantry combat rifle, the first to be issued in over 20 years.

The Sharpshooter rifle, capable of firing a 7.62mm round, significantly enhances the accuracy of engagement during longer-range combat missions.

Over 400 semi-automatic L129A1 Sharpshooter rifles have been received by the Royal Marines from 40 Commando as an urgent operational requirement.

The combat rifle joins the currently operated range of weapons in Afghanistan including SA80 A2 assault rifles, light machine guns, combat shotguns, sniper systems and the Javelin weapons system.
