Navy officials said four carrier-based AEW&C aircraft would be procured to perform airborne surveillance, detection and tracking of airborne and surface contacts, and control air interceptions and air strikes, according to ptinews.com.
“The new AEW&C aircraft will expand control over the area of their deployment while detecting enemy patrol aircraft and intercepting them by directing the fighter planes attached,” officials said.
Currently, the navy is operating the Russian-built carrier-borne Kamov-31 for early warning roles.
