The sixth Virginia Class submarine has joined the navy’s Submarine Squadron Four to further train and test the onboard crew.
The 377ft-long, 34ft-wide submarine has a full load displacement of 7,800t and operate at speeds in excess of 25kt.
USS New Mexico will carry out missions including anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship warfare, strike warfare, battle group support and mine warfare missions.
The submarine features a reactor plant that enables the ship to go without refuelling for its entire lifetime, thereby reducing service maintenance costs.
Northrop Grumman delivered the submarine to the US Navy in December 2009, after which it officially joined the navy fleet in March at Naval Station Norfolk.
