An emergency hotline is to be set up between Japan and China after concerns were expressed about the encroachment of the rapidly expanding Chinese naval fleet.

The hotline between the two countries would allow leaders to discuss important issues quickly and ease military tension, according to a Japanese official.

In April, a group of Chinese warships were spotted in seas near Okinawa and later that month an official protest was lodged by Tokyo after a Chinese helicopter flew near a Japanese destroyer in waters off Okinawa.
