Australian submarine HMAS Dechaineux has completed its first upgrade at the Australian Submarine Corporation’s (ASC) Adelaide yard and arrived at its home port of Fleet Base West in Western Australia.

According to Minister for Defence Material and Science Greg Combet, during the docking period, the Collins Class submarine was fitted with the BYG-1 combat system and mk48 mod 7 heavyweight torpedo.

“The combat system and torpedo have been developed by the ASC in cooperation with the US Navy,” he said.

“The combat and weapon system upgrades, together with an augmented special forces deployment capability fitted to Dechaineux make it the navy’s most capable submarine.”

HMAS Dechaineux is the fourth of six Collins Class submarines to complete the upgrade following intensive sea trials to demonstrate the operational capability of the systems.

HMAS Dechaineux joins HMAS Waller and HMAS Collins, which are currently operating from Fleet Base West.
