The Indian Navy is looking to purchase hydrographic survey vessels that can map underwater landscapes to train naval cadets in coastal and oceanic regions.

The vessels will conduct surveys near ports and harbours to check navigational approaches, channels and routes for defence applications.

A navy official said the survey vessels would be modelled on the navy’s hydrographic survey ship INS Darshak built by the Goa Shipyard and commissioned in 2001.

INS Darshak is the navy’s eighth survey vessel. It has a length of approximately 85m and a standard displacement capacity of up to 2,000t.
