The US Navy’s guided missile cruiser, USS Mobile Bay, has successfully completed a ten-month upgrade and modernisation programme at BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair and will rejoin the fleet shortly.

During the modernisation, the Ticonderoga Class cruiser was fitted with the latest warfighting technology including upgrades to the Aegis weapons system, improved sonar and radar, and a complete overhaul of the combat systems.

The SEA 21’s cruiser modernisation programme aimed to modernise and enhance the combat capabilities of Aegis-equipped cruisers while minimising the total maintenance costs.

The remaining 19 cruisers of the same class will undergo structured modernisation to improve their operational availability for their projected 35-year service lives.

SEA 21 manages the complete life-cycle support, including the maintenance and modernisation of non-nuclear surface ships currently operating in the fleet.
