General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) has begun construction on the US Navy’s 13th dry cargo ship, USNS Medgar Evers.

USNS Medgar Evers will be used by the navy’s Military Sealift Command primarily to transport US Marine Corps equipment overseas.

Delivery of the dry cargo / ammunition ship to the navy is scheduled for the second quarter of 2012.

The shipbuilding contract is part of the navy’s T-AKE acquisition programme for 14 ships, of which NASSCO has delivered the first nine T-AKE vessels.

The Lewis and Clark Class ship is named in honour of US Army veteran and civil rights activist Medgar Evers from Mississippi.
