Thales will equip three additional French Navy FREMM frigates with radar, infrared search and track, sonar and communications systems.

Under the contract, Thales will supply the frigates with detection, scrambling and decoy systems to detect threats, intercept communications and provide self defence.

French Defence Minister Hervé Morin announced in October 2009 that three additional navy frigates had been ordered, bringing the country’s total order to 11.

The three new frigates bring the total order to 11, which includes nine anti-submarine versions and two anti-air versions.

In 2005, France and Italy launched a European programme for the FREMM multimission frigate, which intends to replace existing navy frigates with new 6,000t frigates fitted with the latest warfare systems.
