Under the 11-month contract, the company will upgrade the ship’s communication equipment, main propulsion system, welldock and aviation support facilities, and will make improvements to the crew and embarked military forces’ living quarters.
In addition, Babcock will remove the ship’s outer bottom anti-fouling paint and replace it with the new ultra-sleek system that improves fuel efficiency and speed through the water.
The improvements will be carried out on the high-pressure salt water, drainage and sewage systems.
The ship will return to the fleet in February 2011 following the first docking period at Devonport.
The contract which follows successful completion of HMS Albion’s docking period in July last year has been awarded under the Surface Ship Support Alliance, which involves the MoD, Babcock and BAE Systems.
