The US Navy has awarded a contract to Harris Corporation to provide 23 shipboard satellite terminals with broadband capability.

Under the $10.7m contract, Harris will supply 1.3m satellite communications terminals, which offer both X and Ku-band capability and support ten times the bandwidth currently accessible onboard navy ships.

The new broadband capability will provide personnel onboard frigates with access to the internet, video and other high-speed broadband services, and will allow the sailors to easily handle routine activities online.

The new terminals support essential mission requirements and will allow the navy to increase military satellite communications while providing high-speed internet access and video communications on unit-level class ships.

The satellite terminals contract is part of the $77m commercial broadband satellite programme (CBSP) unit-level variant (ULV) contract originally awarded to Harris in 2008.
