The Swedish Navy has awarded a contract to Kockums AB for the overall design phase of the navy’s next-generation submarine project.

Designed to operate in the Baltic and other littoral waters, the next-generation submarine features several advances in the development of underwater technology and fights against current and future threats.

In addition, the submarine incorporates stealth technology that enables the vessel to remain undetected while observing everything over a wide area.

Kockums AB CEO Ola Alfredsson said the next-generation submarine would be built as an advanced version of the navy’s attack submarine HMS Gotland, which demonstrated its capabilities during a two-year joint exercise in the waters off the US.
