The US Navy has received the sixth Virginia Class submarine, the USS New Mexico, from Northrop Grumman Corporation, four months ahead of schedule.

The Virginia Class ships have all been built by Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding in collaboration with General Dynamics Electric Boat.

The 377ft-long, 34ft-wide and 7,800t submarine can dive to depths of 800ft and has a submerged speed in excess of 25kt.

The vessel is considered the most sophisticated attack submarine in the world, providing undersea supremacy.

The submarine can perform anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship warfare, strike warfare, special operations, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, irregular warfare, battle group support and mine warfare missions.
