A joint anti-piracy patrol (JAPP) has been set up between the Mauritius National Coast Guard (MNCG) and the Indian Navy to enhance the security levels in the Indian Ocean region.
As part of the JAPP, two warships from the Indian Navy will patrol the territorial waters of the Seychelles, which border the Northern Boundary of the Mauritius Maritime Zone.
The JAPP aims to reassure merchant ships and fishing vessels that the Mauritian Government is implementing adequate safety measures to enhance military presence in the region.
Indian naval ship (INS) Shardul and the INS Varuna, together with training members of the MNCG, will conduct missions such as board, search and seizure drills against suspicious vessels sailing in the region and also conduct firefighting and pollution control operations.
