Four tsunami-prone regions in Indonesia will receive a Japanese-built maritime surveillance system as part of a $300m grant scheme to improve security and safety for vessels in Indonesian waters.

The maritime surveillance system will be built in Tarakan (East Kalimantan), Manado (North Sulawesi), Bali, and Kupang (East Nusa Tenggara).

Talks are also underway between the Indonesian Navy’s Security Coordination Agency and the Japanese Government for the acquisition of three boats from the Japanese coastguard.

The two grant schemes will be handed over to the Indonesian Navy within three years.
