The newly formed Somali Navy will start patrolling the coast and waters of Somalia, according to Deputy Prime Minister Abdurahman Hajji Aden Ibbi.

Over 500 Somali coastguards of whom 100 were members of the former Somali Navy, along with the newly trained navy force numbering 528 men will patrol the country’s coastal waters.

The new Somali Navy will guard the northern portion of the coastline, from the harbour to Elma’an, a natural harbour, 15 miles north of Mogadishu.

According to the European Union (EU), anti-piracy and other security forces of Somalia’s interim government could also receive training from EU forces, adding to a training mission that France has already started alone.
