Russia’s state-run civilian nuclear power corporation Rosatom has announced plans to dismantle 191 out of the 198 nuclear submarines decommissioned from the Russian Navy by 2010.

Rosatom deputy general director Yevgeny Yevstratov said the disposal of about 25 submarines was not yet complete and many were still being dismantled.

The dismantling process includes the removal of spent nuclear fuel from the submarine’s reactors and transfer into storage, cutting the hull into three sections, and removing and destroying the bow and stern sections.

Rosatom has signed cooperation agreements on the disposal of decommissioned nuclear submarines with the United States, Britain, Canada, Japan, Italy and Norway.
