With the turbine engine fitted, the Baden-Wurttemberg-class frigate will use a combined diesel electric and gas turbine system which also features four MTU 20V 4000 M53B diesel engines and generators.
The generators will produce a total of 12,060kW horsepower for the ship’s onboard power supply system, providing diesel-electric propulsion power for cruising speeds of up to 20kt.
Manufacture work for the gas turbine engine will be carried out at GE’s Evendale, Ohio, facility and will be delivered to German commercial engine manufacturer MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH plant in March 2010 for placement into its propulsion module.
The new F125 frigate is being constructed by a consortium of two German shipyards – ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and Fr Lürssen Werft.
