The US Navy has awarded a research and development contract to technology solutions company Alion Science and Technology to provide technical solutions for airborne anti-submarine warfare (ASW) platforms and training environments.

Under the $7m improved live virtual constructive (LVC) integration research programme the company will develop live platform integration, a computer interface technology for surface ship, submarine and aircraft platforms in support of the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWC TSD).

The research will enhance alternative training generating methods for synthetic threat scenarios to be inserted into the sensor and combat systems of the soldiers.

Alion Distributed Simulation Group vice president and manager Rear Admiral Richard E Brooks said the improvements will enhance the affordability, utility and reusability of LVC integration technologies for military education and training and mission rehearsals.

Work under the contract has already started and is expected to be complete by 30 November 2012.
